A Mayday call was received by Dover Coastguard from the 33 foot yacht, Gratitude stating that he had touched bottom on The Goodwin Sands and also he was unsure of his exact position.

Walmer ILB was immediately tasked to assist. It was quickly ascertained there were 4 people on board and she had refloated after bumping her away across the sands to deeper water. Using the on board direction finding equipment she was quickly found. Once alongside the yacht the crew checked all were well on board and that the yacht was not taking water. She was then escorted to Dover Harbour as a precaution.

Nicola Goodban, Walmer Helm said “ We found the yacht very quickly and after discussions with their crew it was agreed we would escort them to a safe haven. It was blowing a North Easterly near gale with a below zero wind chill factor. On board we had a new crew member, Lee Waddon who was on his first emergency launch”.
