A 26 foot yacht called "Skyflyer" used a mobile phone to call Dover Coastguard at 04.25 am on Monday morning to request assistance. The yacht was apparently on passage from Sandwich to Newhaven and being sailed by the owner alone. The yacht had decided to anchor off the Butts at Kingsdown for the night. The yacht did not appear to have any working electrical systems, so there were no navigation lights, anchor light or VHF radio.

The wind increased during the night (in advance of the rain), so the owner called Coastguard for assistance. Walmer Lifeboat launched at 04.40 am and having found the yacht, escorted it back to the safety of Ramsgate Harbour. The lifeboat returned to the Lifeboat Station at 08.30 am. The lifeboat crew and shore helpers then went to their day jobs.

Denis Brophy, Lifeboat Operations Manager at Walmer Lifeboat Station said "It is always important, but even more so at night, to ensure that your yacht's equipment is in good working order before going to sea".
